ORSAY MUSEUM
Paris Monument
It was once a railway station which was remarkably transformed in one of the most worldwide-known museums. Its visit itself is a must.
The Gare d’Orsay was built for the 1900 International Exhibition. The Grand Central station in New York is actually a copy of Orsay. Then, deserted and stopped being used in 1939, it nearly was pulled down in the seventies but finally became a Museum in 1986.
Its large iron structure is made out of steel and contains more metal than the Eiffel Tower. Its steel frames are hidden by the stone-built façade. A Mercure stone head representing the God for travelers and trade will be kept and restored. The maintenance works began in 1978. Many workers will work around the clock (300 during the day and 80 at night) to finish the Museum in 1986.
