Arc De Triomphe Famous Napoleon’s imperial landmark the "Arc de Triomphe" gives an impressive perspective over Paris and onto its twelve avenues all converging in a star shape. Conciergerie Built on the site of the substantial remains of Palais des Capétiens, the Conciergerie bears witness to the remarkable 14th century civil architecture. This is the oldest prison in France and it is where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned during the French Revolution. Its four towers, the Tour de l’Horloge, the Tour Bombec, the Tour d’Argent and the Tour César border the Seine. Metro: Chatelet or Cité Opening hours is 9.30 to 6.30 in the summer. [More...] |
Hotel De Ville This neo Renaissance building dating back to 1873 was situated on the once Grand Place de Grève. It was built to replace the previous one which was burnt out under the Commune in 1871. The square was once where took place horrid executions. Ravaillac, the murderer of Henri IV was torn apart alive in 1610. 136 statues represent famous historical figures. Its beautiful rooms are decorated by various 19th Century artists. Group visits only or by appointment. [More...] |
La Madeleine Napoleon I ordered its building in the style of a Greek and Roman temple. The works started in 1764 and were completed after the French Revolution. Its bronze doors are covered with engraved scenes showing the Ten Commandments. The illustrated frontispiece shows the Last Judgment. The inside is richly decorated with marble and gold and includes superb statues. [More...] |
Montparnasse Tower The tower is directly placed above the metro. The building itself is composed of a concrete core, designated to withstand the wind and floor loads, and a steel structure made as light as possible. The external appearance of the glass tower (light bay windows), aluminum and bronze, reflects the sky, while its curved shape is like an almond with indented ends and softens the general volume.
